If indeed evolution undergirds the emergence of human life, then we must concede that the human person does not “have” a soul or acquire a soul through special divine intervention; rather the human person is ensouled in the same way that every aspect of conscious life is ensouled. As Thomas Berry reminded us, the earth is primary and we are children of the earth. This means, of course, that our understanding of the “soul” must be reconsidered in terms of quantum physics and evolution. Quantum physics may not only shed light on the meaning of the “soul” in terms of consciousness but it impels us to consider personality in view of the deep entangled energy fields that comprise the fundamental framework of reality.

Refined spiritual teachings tell us that the perception that we are separated from each other is an illusion; thus we have the mystical teaching that “All is One.” Mystical teachings are given the status of “mystical” because they are beyond “reasonable.”  That is, they cannot be “comprehended” through the intellect. You can nod your head at the theory that “All is One” because on paper, the idea makes good sense. But it is impossible for you to actually “get” the power of that idea because it is not an “idea.” It is a “truth” and mystical truths are not accessible through the mind. They can only be revealed to you through the soul when your soul is mature enough to handle the consequences of such a profound and enlightened revelation.

The distinctive human capacity for reflection and intentional choice carries a corresponding moral responsibility to care for one another and the planet. Indeed, our deepest desire is to live in loving relationships with one another. The hunger for loving families and communities is a powerful, but latent, unifying force and the potential foundation of a winning political coalition dedicated to creating societies that support every person in actualizing his or her highest potential. In these turbulent and often frightening times, it is important to remind ourselves that we are privileged to live at the most exciting moment in the whole of the human experience. We have the opportunity to turn away from Empire and to embrace Earth Community as a conscious collective choice. We are the ones we have been waiting for.
